The study of music and its influence confronts the Christian with a complicated paradox. The less he studies and thinks about music, the more he imagines he knows about it. However, the more he studies and thinks about music, the more he realizes how little he actually knows about it. It is hoped that this book will in some small measure help alleviate this paradox for Bible-believing Christians.
Is music amoral? An incorrect answer to this question has led to multiplied pereversions of the principles of the Word of God as they apply to music. Music in the Balance goes right to the core of this issue by approaching it in a logical and unemotional manner. Using the teaching of Scripture and the understanding of communication scholars, Frank Garlock and Kurt Woetzel have given those seeking the truth a solution to the problem which has caused so many Christains to stumble.
Believing that the Bible is rational and that good men are reasonable, these authors have combined their many years of research, study, and practical application of the principles of good music into a comprehensive and yet easily understandable text. Trained musicians will appreciate the scholarship of their studies and novices will understand and gain valuable insight into a subject which has been confusing to so many during the last part of the twentieth century. If the Lord tarries His coming, believers will profit greatly from examining and applying the principles taught in this book.
Frank Garlock began teaching Biblical principles of music to Christians over forty years ago. Then in 1965, when rock music became a major problem among Christians and in society in general, he started using the principles he developed from the Word of God to teach young people and adults how the sound which is called rock violates these principles. The recording of his message, called The Big Beat: A Rock Blast, and the book he authored with the same title both became best-sellers and were used not only to help Christians, but to bring many to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. In 1973, Dr. Garlock left his teaching position at Bob Jones University to travel extensively, delivering his series of mesages which was then called The Symphony of Life Seminar. In these seminars, which have taken him to every state and many foreign countries, he has not only taught how the Bible applies to music, but has also gleaned much knowledge about the music of a variety of cultures. This knowledge has reinforced and substantiated much of the material contained in this book. Dr. Garlock also started Majesty Music, Inc., the largest independent recording and publishing company for Bible-believing Christians.
Kurt Woetzel attended the Sacred Music Master's Program of Pensacola Christian College, directed by Dr. Garlock. He received his graduate degree in 1990 and now assists the Majesty Music staff in the Choral Seminars, which reach an average of over 700 church musicians each year.
