Whatever happened to hell?
Although the historic doctrine of hell has been contested since the Enlightenment, the past fifty years have witnessed a new and unsettling development. Attacks that used to come from outside the church are now coming from within. This is especially true concerning two aberrations. Universalism insists that ultimately, all persons will be saved and none will be lost. Annihilationsim--or conditionalism, as it is commonly called--maintains that the wicked will ultimately cease to exist.
What does the Bible say about hell? Offering a multifaceted and richly detailed look at a disturbing topic, Hell Under Fire lays a solid foundation for historic teaching. It refutes false doctrines that ultimately cheapen what Jesus accomplished through his death and resurrection. And it shows why hell belongs in our preaching as the fearful backdrop against which salvation shines so brightly.
